INFOhio Blizzard Bags - Grades K-3: Locating Information

Students follow the six dimensions of inquiry as they read, investigate and complete the activities. Ohio's learning standards are integrated into the activities.


  1. Read more about snow and ice in Early World of Learning. Click on Know It > Weather.   Locate the Snow and Ice link. Click “Open” to learn about winter weather. Click on the question marks to learn more. Click the “It’s a Fact” to learn an interesting fact about igloos. Click the X to close.  Go back to Snow and Ice and look at pictures of snowflakes and other forms of snow. You will have to choose the Snow and Ice link each time that you close an image. Watch the short video about a glacier breaking.  (20-30 minutes)  
  2. Every snowflake begins as a six-sided ice crystal.   Look around your house, school, or outside and find more things that have six sides. Make a list of your findings. (20-30 minutes)
  3. Brainstorm a list of 8-10 keywords or phrases that you could use to search for information related to the book Snowflake Bentley. (15-20 minutes)
  4. Use Explora for Grades PreK-5 to find 3-5 articles about snow, ice crystals, snowflakes, Wilson Bentley, or any snow-related topics. Be sure to check the Lexile level to see if it is in your range. Read and take brief notes on the content of the articles. (45-60 minutes)  
  5. Watch the Science Online short video “Science of Ice and Snow: The Making of a Snowflake.” (10-20 minutes).
  6. View the short video, “Science of Ice and Snow:  How Do You Photograph a Snowflake”  found in Science Online.     (10-20 minutes)
  7. Use Explora for Grades PreK-5 to locate and read the article, “Seeing a Snowflake.” Click the PDF full text link.  (15-30 minutes) 
  8. Wilson Bentley lived in Vermont in the northeastern part of the United States. Use World Book Kids to research the state and to learn more about it. Be sure to notice where it is compared to where you live. (15-30 minutes)
