Students follow the six dimensions of inquiry as they read, investigate and complete the activities. Ohio's learning standards are integrated into the activities.

  1. Learn more about snow. To start, watch/read the book Snowflake Bentley and the nonfiction book Snow in BookFlix. Type Snowflake Bentley in the search box. Add new information you learn to your KWL chart. Did you find out what snow is made of yet? (K-3) (30 minutes)

  2. Read more about snow and ice in Early World of Learning. Click on Know It, and then Weather.   Locate the Snow and Ice link. Click “Open” to learn about winter weather. Click on the question marks to learn more. Click the “It’s a Fact” to learn an interesting fact about igloos. Click the X to close.  Go back to Snow and Ice and look at pictures of snowflakes and other forms of snow. You will have to choose the Snow and Ice link each time that you close an image. Watch the short video about a glacier breaking.  Did you learn more new information about snow? Write it down on your KWL chart! (K-3) (20-30 minutes)
  3. Every snowflake begins as a six-sided ice crystal.   Look around your house, school, or outside and find more things that have six sides. Make a list of your findings on your own piece of paper. (K-1) (20-30 minutes)
  4. Brainstorm a list of 8-10 keywords or phrases that you could use to search for information related to the book Snowflake Bentley. (2-3) (15-20 minutes)
